The Brotherhood of the Woods

This semi-secret society was founded by the Callarii elf Lathan Spearhand, after he came back from an adventurous journey across the Sea of Dread. Lathan had to pay a large sum to the Black Eagle Baron to ransom his
fiancée, an elven maiden from Rifllian whom the Iron Ring had kidnapped.

Seeing that the Duke's justice was not going to reach the Baron, Lathan decided to take the matter in his own hands. He soon discovered he was not the only victim of von Hendricks' misdeeds. Thus, he contacted many of those who had reason to take revenge on the Baron, and formed a society devoted to bringing down the Black Eagle and the Iron Ring, by whatever means were necessary.

The Brotherhood is currently a small group, but is composed almost entirely of low to mid level adventurers. Lathan also has several contacts with other groups, including the Traladaran resistance movement in Fort Doom and Luln. New members are recruited by Lathan himself in Specularum. There are no fixed requirements to join, except a grudge against von Hendricks and the Iron Rings, and some fighting or magical skills.

The Brotherhood meets at the Hippogriff Inn, in the north market district of Specularum, near the old city walls. The innkeeper is a friend of Lathan's, and relays messages left by other members of the Brotherhood.

Joining the ranks

Being an enemy of the Black Eagle Baron is the primary requirement. Adventuring skills of all types are appreciated, but the Brotherhood has a use for more mundane supporters. The Brotherhood is a fairly informal organisation, with no ranks at all.

Anton Halovich is a native of Luln and grew up in fear of the constant raids sent by the Baron Von Hendricks. He lost his mother to one of the raid and he has hated the Black Eagle ever since. Since he was a child, he felt a close connection to the Immortal Halav and he embraced his role as a Favored Soul. He was one of Mistress Sascia’s most trusted defenders before he was recruited by Lathan into the Brotherhood.

Anton serves as Lathan’s messenger and recruiter in the area around Luln. He still defends the town from raiders and helps heal the wounded at the Temple of Halav, but now he leads scouting parties and guerrilla troops into Black Eagle territory. He is a fierce warrior and his skill at healing makes him a valuable addition to any group. He is known to join adventurers who oppose the Black Baron for individual missions. He will also pay good-aligned Traladaran adventurers to guard him when he must travel alone. He prefers to trade potions for these guards as opposed to gold.

Description:

Lathan has the classic sun-tanned skin and light hair of the Callarii elves. He dresses quite simply, in the rough clothing of a Callarii traveler and hunter. The grey-green cloak he wears is clearly of elven make, as are his boots. He is never without his bow, which has been handed down in his family since the Great Rain of Fire.

'Elf

Background

Lathan grew up among the traders of Rifllian, but took to the woods as a hunter and explorer. Lathan fell in love with the beautiful Thelia, and they became betrothed. Thelia was captured by slavers from the Iron Ring and held by the Black Baron. Lathan attempted to rescue her but was forced to pay an enormous ransom to free her. Lathan then moved his betrothed back to Rifllian, where they married. He has exhausted many attempts to bring the Black Baron to justice in the courts of Karameikos and sees that the Duke is blind to his cousin’s evil. He has founded the Brotherhood of the Woods, a loose network of adventurers that oppose the Black Eagle Barony and the slavers of the Iron Ring. He journeys between bands, providing direction and tutoring. His bands send him reports and intelligence via magic and discrete messengers.

Above all, Lathan hates the Black Eagle with a passion. That Baron Von Hendricks uses goblin and orc tribes to raid the peaceful villages of elves, hin and Traladarans is repulsive to Lathan. He has studied the tactics of the Black Eagle troops and can strike at their troops with his arrows and spell. He is stealthy and strikes from ambush. He is studying the path of the arcane archer, and is always hunting new spells for his spellbook.
